Precision Large Pattern Laser Cutting

Situation

A startup required to develop a Laser Cutting platform to cut intricate fine patterns for flexible circuits.

Problem

Indexed or on the fly cutting, up to 1 m wide flexible metal webs with +/- 50 um RSS cut pattern feature placement accuracy over 250 mm span.

ODI Role

Owens developed an automated laser cutting system:

  • Integrating 8x high power lasers
  • 8x 3D galvo scanners in stitched linear array with 10 mm overlap
  • 725 kg gantry accurate to +/-25 um across 1.4 m and with speed up to 100 mm/s
  • Machine vision for alignment web and patterns
  • Full integration to web handling and web wash station
