Furnace Handling Tool for Electric Vehicle Battery Manufacturing

Situation

A pre-pilot production tool was needed to stack materials around the key battery layer prior to entering into a furnace. The same tool needed to work in reverse to unstack the components and send the layer to its next process step.

Problem

The tool needed to be designed while the components and sizes were still in flux.

Solution

Owens created a 5-robot, 12-camera, multi-conveyor system with the flexibility to handle various inputs (quantity and type) to accurately stack and unstack the parts at a ~3600 UPH rate. With end of arm modifications and adjustments to the vision jobs, future adaptability exists to handle even more types of parts.
