Automated Liquid Handling for Synthetic Biology Workflow

Problem

A leader in microfluidic dispensing needed design and manufacturing of their next generation synthetic biology workflow platform to address modularity, flexibility, manufacturability, serviceability, and cost. A flexible design required integrating up to 100 devices from 30 different suppliers based on customer requests. The manufacturer needed a partner with experience in designing modular/expandable systems, supporting ongoing changes, and delivering turnkey manufacturing for highly customized configurations.

Solution

  • Developed a modular platform to accommodate multiple configurations and the large suite of required devices
  • Designed the system to include an environmentally controlled primary cabin, single or dual robot handling options, and module alignment within microns of accuracy allowing for ease of robot teaching
  • Worked with the customer’s internal teams to rapidly evaluate cost and custom design configurations
  • Managed all materials and provided turnkey manufacturing, with all FATs completed at Owens Design
