The Situation
A major manufacturer of hard disk drive media was faced with a common challenge. How to implement an improved process within the constraints of existing footprint and at minimum cost.
The Challenge
The new process technology required integrating a megasonic quick dump tank and two multi-frequency ultrasonic tanks into an existing automation cleanline. This required an innovative approach to packaging the generators, plumbing, and controls into a small volume. Ultraclean fluid handling and cleanliness requirements compounded the design challenge.
The Solution
Owens Design collaborated with the manufacturer's process engineering group to define how certain modules of the automated clean lines could be upgraded to perform the new processes. Owens Design developed and built the complete cleaning module while incorporating the customer specified process and meeting the footprint and transfer methodology of the existing equipment.
The design incorporated a megasonic generator and two multi-frequency ultrasonic generators. The three tank module can be programmed for variable cleaning cycles. Each 4-sided overflow tank included a high and low flow re-circulation and sub-micron filtration. Fully automated mechanisms provide vertical and rotational oscillation of the parts.
